November 25th, a cold and rainy day in Amsterdam, became a moment of warmth as we gathered with hearts full of love, humanity, and a belief in equality. Together, under the rain, we sang songs of solidarity for the women of Afghanistan. I called upon poets, artists, and women to unite against gender apartheid and violence. And they came.
We believe in the power of words—poetry that can capture hearts, transcend borders, and connect people around the world. In harmony with the sound of rain, we read poetry, sang songs, danced, and chanted for freedom, equality, and solidarity with Afghan women.
Art can be this beautiful and powerful. Art can resist silence. Art can be a voice for women whose voices have been silenced. I continue to call on all artists to rise in protest against gender apartheid. Let your art be a defiance against oppression, a song for those forcibly muted.
I hope this circle of solidarity grows wider every day. Let our arms remain open to one another, and let us imagine a world where all people live freely.
In a world where women are marginalized, subjected to violence, or face discrimination, there can be no true freedom, beauty, or safety for anyone.
